ROSSI

Argentina MotoGP runner-up Valentino Rossi felt Sunday's required pit stop at the Termas de Rio Hondo circuit worked against him after he struggled to run the same pace in the second half of the race.

The Movistar Yamaha rider gained two places on the final lap of when Ducati pair Andrea Iannone and Andrea Dovizioso crashed out at the final corner, after Iannone made a hopeful dive up his team-mate's inside.

However, Italian Rossi felt he had the chance to challenge Marc Marquez for victory until he was forced to change to his second M1 - all riders being required to make a bike change in the aftermath of a tyre failure for Scott Redding in practice.

“In the end it was a shame because in the first part I was a lot more strong and lot more competitive, so I think I can do a very good fight for try to win,” Rossi said.

“It's also a shame because during the weekend we never had a problem with the tyres on the Yamaha and because of another bike [Redding's tyre problem], we need to change everything when we don't suffer.

“At the end it was a very good result because with the rain the track changed the level of grip and in these conditions we struggled most. For some reason with the second bike and the second set of tyres I had a lot more problems to have the same pace,” he added.

“Also the conditions were very bad and I was never able to take the rhythm and at the end [Maverick] Vinales arrived and also the two Ducatis. Iannone overtook me at the end at turn five, but I braked very deep and we both went wide and Dovizioso overtook us.

“At that moment I thought the podium was over for me because I cannot do nothing so this 20 points are important for the championship and especially I am very happy for my team and for Yamaha.”

LORENZO

“I cannot be happy. Conditions were not perfect, but it was the same for everyone,” Lorenzo said. “Half of the riders more-or-less crashed and the other half stayed on the bike. It was not easy. I didn't know how to ride the same as the first riders and, not only that, I also didn't have the patience to stay on the bike.

“So just forgot this race and try to be positive because normally we race in dry conditions and in dry conditions we are competitive, and also in completely wet we are competitive. In life and racing sometimes you have a bad day, but you cannot forget all the good days that you've had.”

“A difficult corner because there was just a tight line that was completely dry. The other lines had a lot of damp patches, so if you enter a little too fast or too wide it was difficult to stay on the bike,” he said. “Unfortunately I made a mistake. Normally in dry or with full wet I'm very focussed, very concentrate. But today I wasn't riding very well, or focussed for these particular conditions.”

Why weren't you as focussed?

“Because I wasn't competitive. Because the patches were there and didn't dry up. And I wasn't competitive enough to be as fast as the other riders. They stayed on the bike and I didn't.”

The DNF means Lorenzo has slipped to fourth in the world championship, 16 points from race winner Marc Marquez.

MARQUEZ

Michelin's decision to withdraw both planned rear compounds after an incident involving Scott Redding added to the intrigue and Marquez hailed his triumph as a special win.

“I'm really happy with the first victory of the year because we worked really hard during this pre-season, in the Qatar race and here and it was a special Sunday with the change in tyres and conditions,” he said.

“When we heard the race would be like Australia, everybody inside the box was laughing because of the mistake that we did [failed to pit in 2013].

“It is the first victory of the year and after Australia it was important for my team. If they say that you will lead the championship when we are in Malaysia I would say you are crazy, but we worked hard and we always believed and Honda is working really good. We are working in the same way and this is most important,” he added.

“Here, we know that this circuit can be good for us and at the start of the race with the first bike I tried to manage the rhythm of the race because I didn't feel good with it.

“On the second bike I could push and I gave 100 per cent and did my fastest lap and was able to open the gap.”

“It was a good battle and I was just trying to concentrate on the rhythm but we were riding quite fast and the track was a little bit dangerous with the wet parts,” he said. “He overtook me some times and I overtook him, so it was a very nice battle.”

“It is a circuit that a like and USA is something special for me. We will see, but of course we will try to do a great job and try to work hard from Friday,” he said.

“The important thing for us is to try to be there in the top and on the podium and to be in the championship.”

PEDROSA

Dani Pedrosa admitted his podium finish in the Argentina MotoGP was more than a little fortuitous after the Repsol Honda rider struggled to find any pace during the race.

“I did a good start and I wanted to go in between Marc [Marquez] and Valentino [Rossi] because Valentino had come off his line at the start, but then it started to close so I decided to go to the outside,” Pedrosa said.

“When I started to tip in at the first turn I saw a bike coming past and I couldn't avoid it, so I had to pick up my bike and I was pushed out to the edge of the first turn.

“I lost the first group and I was struggling in the back and I couldn't really recover. Unfortunately my rhythm wasn't really good and I didn't have a good feeling at all with the bike.

“In the second bike the setting was also the same and I couldn't go any faster. I was not fighting for any good position but so many riders crashed today and I was able to bring the bike to the line and that saved me one podium.”

Pedrosa missed the Argentina race in 2015 and was happy to leave with 16 championship points, although he admits the lack of punch in acceleration with the RC213V is a cause for concern ahead of the next race at Austin in Texas.

“It's the first podium of the year and it's obviously good because last year I wasn't here and I missed the race, so today I am on the podium and this is a positive thing,” he said.

“I'm looking forward to the next race and hoping to make a good step with the setting so I can be with the front guys and try to do a good lap time.

“In the race it's unbelievable how much we lose on acceleration and also in a straight line, so we will know what to expect for Austin but we will try to do some other things so we can keep up.”

DOVIZIOSO

Robbed of a runner-up finish, a disappointed Dovizioso said: “I'm really disappointed because to lose at that point is a disaster. To lose 20 points and be second in the championship to [Marc] Marquez by just one point is just very unfortunate.

“I approached the race and the weekend to take the best result for the championship and this I think is the way to approach everything when you are in a factory team and you want to get good results.

“We worked really hard in the last two years and we really created a good bike together and to lose the points like this is unacceptable,” he added.

“I didn't know if Iannone was there or Valentino [on last lap] but when I crash I knew it was Iannone and I can expect something like this.”

“This weekend was very difficult for everybody and we were able to manage the situation, we were very competitive in the qualifying and in the practice and I was able to finish second in the race,” he said.

“I was able to pass Valentino and for the championship race this is important, so these are the positive things for the next race.

“Austin is a really nice track and we have to confirm again in a different situation our speed.”

IANNONE

Andrea Iannone wiped himself and Ducati team-mate Andrea Dovizioso out of a double podium finish, just metres from the end of the Argentine MotoGP.

Iannone began the race making contact with Marc Marquez at turn one and ended it with a dubious lunge inside Dovizioso to try and snatch second at the penultimate corner.

Instead, he skittled them both into the gravel and was later handed a three-place grid penalty for next weekend's Austin round, plus a penalty point.

While Iannone was out on the spot, the pair were so near to the finish that Dovizioso pushed his machine over the line in 13th.

“I'm okay. I'm just disappointed,” Iannone said. “For sure I worry for the team and my team-mate Andrea. It is a very difficult because, yes, I went down and touch Andrea. Both me and Dovizioso would have been on the podium so to finish the race in this way is unbelievable.

“I didn't brake too late. I braked in the same point, but I stayed a little bit more inside because I had Andrea on the outside... I've been in Race Direction. But for sure I will say sorry to Andrea. Fortunately, I have a good relationship with him.

“I was fast all weekend, in the dry and wet, and have a really high potential. For sure this is a disaster, but is like this.”

Ducati Corse Sporting Director Paolo Ciabatti declared: “Trying the extreme pass at the last corner is good if you're going to win the last race. I don't think in the second race, when you are second or third. That's the only regret we have.

“Andrea Iannone was riding a great race after a difficult start and I know he is the first to be upset with what happened. It would be a night when we would have been out drinking beers together and I think instead we're going to go to bed very early.”

The incident handed Valentino Rossi second place with Marquez's Honda team-mate Dani Pedrosa promoted to third. It also meant that, instead of being just one point behind new title leader Marquez, Dovizioso is 18-points behind.

Iannone meanwhile is yet to score, having also fallen during the opening round in Qatar, when Dovizioso finished second to Jorge Lorenzo.

The pair are under pressure to perform given the rumours that reigning world champion Jorge Lorenzo could join the team in 2017.
